Each year we celebrate the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. ![]() A National Mother's day was first recognized in 1908 and was enacted into law in 1914 without much opposition but the suggestion of an official Father's day was met with a quite heavy skepticism and opposition. It was through much dedication to the cause that it was finally brought into being.
In 1910 Sonara Smart Dodd initiated the process that would lead to a national day to thank dads for all they do for us. She was raised by a single parent father and felt that dads should be honoured for their contributions to family and home. Father's Day became a recognized holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as a day to honour fathers. In 1972 it became an official national holiday when President Nixon dedicated this earlier proclamation into law.
