Thanks dad for all that you do. For being there to talk, for a hug when it is needed, for family vacations, and an enduring love. Thank you for fixing scraped knees, baiting the fish hook and teaching how a bike stays upright. For ice cream cones, movie money, trips to the fair, for help with homework and lessons learned. Thanks for bringing home the bacon and doing all the little extras that make growing up fun.
Each year we celebrate the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. It is a day to acknowledge all the wonderful things that make a dad special and it is an opportunity to say thank-you for all the amazing moments and memories shared.
Every dad is special in his own way. Some dads work at an office and others come home smelling of oil. Some dads like to hunt and fish while others get squeamish at the very thought of popping a worm onto a hook. This is the day that we say thank you for all the wonderful things you do.
A National Day to Celebrate Dad's Contributions to the Family
A National Mother's day was first recognized in 1908 and was enacted into law in 1914 without much opposition but the suggestion of an official Father's day was met with a quite heavy skepticism and opposition. It was through much dedication to the cause that it was finally brought into being.
In 1910 Sonara Smart Dodd initiated the process that would lead to a national day to honor dads. She was raised by a single parent father and felt that dads should be honored for their contributions to family and home.
Father's Day became a recognized holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as a day to honor fathers. In 1972 it became an official national holiday when President Nixon dedicated this earlier proclamation into law.
