There is no other sound on Earth quite like that of a music box. The sweet musical tones are created by tiny pins on a metal cylinder being struck or scratched as they rotate past. Winding up the mechanism within a music box sets the cylinder into motion.
Music boxes were one of mans earliest methods of playing back pre-made music. Romantic and enchanting there is no other sound quite like it. Today these tiny echoing pings of music are romantically reminiscent of a bygone era when life's simplest pleasures could be found within the melody of a wound up musical box.
Old Fashioned Charm in a Delightfully Entrancing Package
The carefully detailed exterior and interior combined with the music compliment one another to create an item to entrance and entertain its viewers. Some boxes are quite simple with only the mechanism as it plays being displayed while others contain intricate animated scenes to enhance the songs that play.
The distinctive styling of the Victorian era is a classic theme in romantic music boxes. The rich colors detail and accent to create an item reminiscent of years gone by. Old fashioned and elegant.
Music boxes are often given to show love and affection to someone dear to us and regarded even today as a very romantic gift, containing a song which says I love you within its melody even more so. Styling that is elegant and enchanting a music box is indeed a rare treasure. Beautifully detailed. What a wonderful gift for someone special.
Although early music boxes were designed specifically to entertain they were also produced with a practical purpose as well. Once the musical mechanism was perfected, jewelry boxes were then also gifted with these enclosed within them.

Some Holiday Traditions Never Change
With songs of sentimental reflection, holiday carols, and childhood rhythm the soft pings and tings of the musical message are clear. They are a moments to stop and relax. Some music boxes are simple with one song within them while others are elaborate with hundreds of tunes within their packaging of wood, plastic, metal, glass, or crystal.
Animated or not each of these musical gifts is magically reminiscent of a bygone time when wishes lie waiting and one had only to find the appropriate key to mystically transport them to reality. Childhood dreams come to life in their tune and memories spring forth like coins from a stream made of gold. Magic!
There is a Magical Charm within the Pinging Chords of Music
A vintage style Christmas music box is a delightful reminder of holidays long ago past. Listening to the tinkling melody of a music box brings back memories of fresh baked cookies, the excitement of waiting for Santa's arrival, and the seasonal joy of visiting with family and friends.
Many of the retro style music boxes contain animated holiday scenes which move magically in rhythm of the Christmas melody which the box plays. Charming and endearing these vintage style Christmas musical boxes are a wonderful reminder of the joy that the holiday season brings with it. The music captured within can hold a child or adult captive for many hours.
A Gentleman's Fancy? Some of the earliest music boxes were small pocket sized snuff music boxes which were tiny enough for gentlemen to carry in their pocket. Versions of these are still available today. Most musical boxes whether vintage or modern will feature a theme.

A circus merry go round, a musical band, skaters, a dancing couple, or a twirling ballerina, are all popular themes for music boxes. The animated scene and tinkling melody beckons you to relax into the simple moments of a time long past.
It really is a musical trail to flow backwards in time to the popular days of this musical entertainment. The music box pre-dates the phonograph, which came before the record player, which preceded the 8 track tape player, which predated cassette music which of course was invented long before our modern day CD player began cranking out tunes for our enjoyment.

It was Magic to Hear the Carolers Singing in the Street
Growing up in a small country town one of the most magical aspects of the Christmas season was to hear the carolers as they walked singing throughout our community's streets.
I can still hear them in the distance as us kids looked out the windows into the darkness awaiting their arrival. The ground white with snow and the carolers chorus growing louder as they approach our door.
Then my parents would open the door and the light would fall upon them. The large soft snowflakes falling softly to cloak their hair and clothing. Their voices a magical symphony that made your cheeks warm and your heart crave to burst free from its restraints.
Carolers Seems More Likely in a Smaller Community
The carolers had a number of houses to visit so their time at our house was always far too brief. They would sing 2 to 3 holiday songs then the music would stop and a round of Merry Christmas greetings would be exchanged.
My mother would pass cookies and mandarin oranges to the children in the group and invite the older singers to take hot chocolate to carry with them on their rounds.
Then they would leave and their voices fade as they moved further down our street. Us kids would rush once more for a spot at the window and strain to see them for as long as they remained visible. The snow out the window fading into the darkness as it enclosed around the disappearing light that was the carolers.
There were later times when I joined the carolers and times when I did not. Then my family relocated and this tradition of Christmas was for me lost. But how that memory does persist.
