Matching Holiday Fashions Can be a Fun New Family Tradition
We of course have always had two options for our bedtime attire, to wear some type of clothing or to sleep in our birthday suit. Clothing is often the chosen option either for concerns of modesty or for the basic need of warmth throughout the chilly night and early morning hours.
Considering that night time and early mornings can get quite cold at different times of the year it is very easy to see how some type of night time clothing option could be a basic need. In olden day it was often underwear which was worn to bed or some similar form of apparel. In the past both men and women would acceptably wear a nightie style night time sleepwear. Caps were often worn for added warmth as olden day homes could be very chilly indeed. These were known as nightshirts. The current modern usage of the word pajama was translated over around the 1800s from the Persian word pay-jameh meaning leg-garment.
The pajama pant came into play when in India a British group noticed that the men there wore a loose footing pant tied at the waist with a drawstring. The lightweight cloth and comfortable feel of this garment made it ideal as sleepwear. It is believed to be in the early 1900s that this garment made its move to America.
