Knit Crafts: Heart Washcloth Pattern
A Delightfully Heartwarming Homemade Gift Idea
Whenever a purchase or referral is made from an advertisement on this website a commission or referral payment is made to Lorelei Cohen.
One of my favourite yarn crafts for gifting to friends and family are homemade knit and crochet washcloths. For use in the kitchen or washroom their softness, strength, and durability is unmatched.
As an old fashioned home item they are wonderfully country charming. I love them and have made my own for about 20 years now. Especially charming is this knit heart washcloth pattern. It is ideal for a wedding or baby shower gift but also perfect for a housewarming, birthday, or Christmas present. Handcrafts have traditionally been one of the more popular themes in gift giving due their practicality, economic thriftiness, and personal touch. They are also a hot selling item at craft and thrift fairs if you are looking to make a little extra money around the holidays. When it comes to yarn crafts the creative options truly are abundant. I hope you enjoy this free knit pattern. The Pattern Moves Along Quite Quickly
I love craft projects that are relatively simple and do not take an extreme amount of hours to complete which makes this piece ideal. If I work steady on this pattern I can complete a dishcloth in less than a day. I am not that diligent in my knitting so will set my projects to the side to pick up when I find my hands are idle and I have a little extra time. Using this method I still manage to complete a washcloth every 3 to 5 days.
I Generally Gift This Item in Pairs
As I complete the cloths I pack them away in a box to have handy should I require an extra gift for a wedding shower, birthday, or the Christmas holiday season. These stored away items really do help in times when money is a little tight.
The Yarn You Choose Should be Suited to Your Project
I use Bernat Handicraft Cotton Yarn for my dishcloths. There is a wide variety of shades with both single colour schemes as well as variegated hues to choose from. You can select any colour for your project and even theme the colors to the person you are crafting the gift for. The cotton yarn creates a thick thirsty washcloth that is highly durable. The cloth wears well and it washes up beautifully when laundered. Select Your Yarn Colour and Let's Get Started

If you are feeling creative and would like to create a unique knit washcloth pattern this is my tip for you. Grab a sheet of graph paper and map out your design. Each space is a stitch and each coloured in squares will be used to create your pattern.
Once you have your image drawn out then select a stitch pattern and write out a pattern that relates to your graphed image. The easiest stitches to include in a pattern are the garter stitch (knit every stitch) and the stockinette stitch (alternating rows of knit and purl). It can be a little confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it. It is a process of mapping out your pattern and counting your stitches. From there writing out the pattern is quite easy. Start with a basic simple pattern ie: a preschoolers colouring page is usually ideal. Then once you have the concept figured out move on to more complex images. You can select any border style for your pattern once you have the basic concept figured out. |
